What Is TMJ Disorder?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a sliding hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull. TMJ disorders (TMD) affect this joint and surrounding muscles, leading to pain and dysfunction. Common symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing your mouth
  • Frequent headaches
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Lockjaw (limited jaw movement)

TMJ disorders can be caused by injury, arthritis, teeth grinding (bruxism), or bite misalignment. Because the TMJ is a complex system involving bones, cartilage, and muscles, proper diagnosis and personalized treatment are essential.

If you’re experiencing TMJ symptoms in Elkhart, IN, early treatment can prevent worsening pain and long-term damage.

Common Causes of TMJ Disorders

Understanding the cause of your TMJ symptoms helps us create the most effective treatment plan. If you live in Elkhart or nearby, our team can evaluate your symptoms and identify the root cause of your discomfort.

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Persistent grinding or clenching of teeth, often occurring during sleep, can strain the jaw joint.

Jaw Misalignment or Bite Issues

An improper bite or misaligned jaw can create excess joint stress, leading to pain and dysfunction.

Stress & Muscle Tension

Elevated stress levels can trigger jaw clenching and muscle tension, worsening TMJ symptoms.

Arthritis in the Jaw Joint

Inflammatory joint disorders can affect the jaw joint, causing pain and restricted movement.

Jaw Injury or Trauma

Direct injury to the jaw area can damage the TMJ and lead to disorders.

Poor Posture

Improper posture, especially during desk work or screen time, can cause muscle strain and jaw misalignment.

Comprehensive TMJ Treatment Options

Personalized solutions to relieve pain, restore function, and improve your daily comfort.

Bite Adjustment & Realignment

Misaligned teeth or uneven bites can trigger TMJ pain. We can relieve joint strain and improve function through minor reshaping or orthodontic treatments.

Replacing Missing Teeth

Missing teeth create gaps that can alter your bite and stress your jaw joint. Bridges, dentures, or dental implants help restore balance and reduce TMJ discomfort.

Custom Mouthpieces (Occlusal Splints)

Custom-fitted night guards or splints prevent teeth grinding and clenching—common TMJ pain triggers. These devices reduce muscle tension and protect your jaw joint.

Restorative Dentistry

Uneven tooth spacing affects how your jaws align. Dental bonding, veneers, or other restorative treatments can improve alignment and reduce joint stress.

Physical Therapy & Jaw Exercises

Targeted exercises and therapy strengthen TMJ muscles, improve mobility, and reduce pain.

TMJ Surgery (If Needed)

While most cases respond to non-invasive treatments, severe TMJ disorders may require surgery to repair or replace the damaged joint for long-term relief.
