Dental Bonding

What Is a Dental Cleaning?

A dental cleaning (also known as a prophylaxis) is a professional treatment performed by a dental hygienist to remove plaque, tartar (hardened plaque), and surface stains from your teeth. Even with excellent at-home brushing and flossing, bacteria and buildup can accumulate in hard-to-reach areas.

During your appointment at our Elkhart dental office, our hygienists will:

  • Remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and along the gumline
  • Polish your teeth for a smooth, clean finish
  • Provide fluoride treatment (if recommended) to strengthen enamel
  • Offer personalized advice to improve your at-home oral care routine

Why Are Dental Cleanings Important?

Routine dental cleanings are about more than just a fresh smile — they play a vital role in your overall oral health. Cleanings help to:

Prevent Cavities

Professional cleanings remove plaque before it has the chance to cause tooth decay, helping keep your smile strong and healthy.

Reduce the Risk of Gum Disease

By clearing away harmful bacteria, dental cleanings lower your chances of developing gingivitis or more serious gum problems.

Protect Overall Health

Oral health is closely linked to whole-body health. Regular cleanings can help reduce risks connected to conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Detect Issues Early

During your visit, our team can spot early signs of cavities, oral cancer, and other concerns—allowing for faster, more effective treatment.

How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?

For most patients, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends scheduling a professional cleaning every six months. However, some patients may benefit from more frequent visits, especially if they:

  • Have a history of gum disease
  • Are prone to cavities
  • Have braces or other orthodontic appliances
  • Struggle with plaque buildup despite daily brushing and flossing

At Topping Dental Group in Elkhart, we’ll recommend a cleaning schedule tailored to your individual needs. Skipping dental cleanings can allow plaque and tartar to build up, increasing your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss.
